SLEEP'N MAG: The best plays currently running in Madrid

Today we’d like to recommend some of the best plays currently showing in Madrid and where you can go to see them. We could have included many more, but we’ve had to narrow it down.

‘El Test – Season 2’ at the Teatro Cofidis Alcázar

A stellar cast heads up this comedy in which anything can happen. Héctor and Paula are a married couple with financial problems who have arranged to meet up with Toni, one of their best friends, and his new girlfriend Berta. She is a highly successful psychologist who has devised a personality test which she suggests the couple take. It begins with a question that is both simple and incredibly complicated: ‘Which would you prefer: 100,000 euros now, or a million in 10 years’ time? What starts as an innocent question will lead to a series of decisions and dilemmas that could change their lives forever. Are you going to miss it?

Cast: Antonio Molero, Luis Merlo, Itziar Atienza, Maru Valdivieso

  • Genre: Comedy

‘Barcelona 92’ at Teatros Luchana

The 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games. Seven characters who have completely different ways of looking at love. This is the starting point for an Olympic comedy about the unwritten rules of romantic relationships in which there are no winners. The vibrant city of Barcelona will be the backdrop for the paths of these characters, whose lives will intertwine in a nostalgic story where there are no medals.

‘Les Misérables’ at the Teatro Reina Victoria

Haven’t you seen one of the greatest classics of French literature yet? What are you waiting for?

Jean Valjean has been locked up in prison for almost two decades for stealing a simple loaf of bread. When he is finally released, he is a completely different man: distrustful, callous and shunned by society. It is then that he encounters Monsignor Myriel, who helps him get his life back on track by giving him a new lease of life. However, his former jailer, Inspector Javert, won’t make things that easy for him.

In short, this is a tale of French society in the mid-19th century, at a time rife with uprisings, revolution and changes towards a fairer society.

‘The Odd Couple’ at Teatro Lara

The title alone might already bring Neil Simon’s iconic comedy to mind. Winner of four Tony Awards, it is one of the classics of American comedy, although, on this occasion, the plot will feature two women from Madrid in the lead roles.

Flora has just left her husband and doesn’t know what to do with her life; she has even contemplated suicide. Seeing her friend’s obvious depression, Olga offers to let her stay in her flat. All would be well so far, were it not for the fact that they couldn’t be more different from one another, which will make living together extremely complicated. One is romantic, outgoing and a bit of a mess. The other is shy, a homebody and a neat freak.

Conflict is inevitable. Do you want to find out how it ends?

‘My Father, Sabina and Me’ at Artespacio Plot Point

It’s night-time and a party is taking place at Joaquín’s house; he’s a man in his seventies with plenty of life left in him. Suddenly, there’s a knock at the door and the man goes to open it – and who’s waiting on the other side? A twenty-five-year-old man who claims to be his son. Thus begins this smash hit by Carlos de Matteis, who has written, directed and starred in this play that straddles the line between musical theatre and conventional drama. De Matteis is also the author of ‘My Mother, Serrat and I’, another great success on stage, and several other plays staged by the Plot Point theatre company.

Until the DNA test results arrive, this unlikely pair will have to live together, and in the process – without realising it, through advice and lessons learnt – they’ll gradually become ‘father and son’, despite their differences. Sabina’s songs weave a warm and endearing atmosphere throughout the play that will envelop you from start to finish. Take our word for it – you can’t afford to miss it!

Cast: Carlos De Matteis, Julián Salguero, Laura Fajardo and Verónica Pérez

  • Venue: Calle de Ercilla, 29, 28005 Madrid – Artespacio Plot Point
