A DAY FOR SHARING: SLEEP'N JOINS FORCES WITH THE FOOD BANK

Ángeles Santos’ blog homepage

The SLEEP'N team volunteered at the Food Bank, helping to sort food. This experience has strengthened our commitment to solidarity and making a positive impact.

At SLEEP'N, we believe that a company’s purpose goes beyond simply providing a good service: it is also about making a positive impact on the community. That’s why our latest team-building event wasn’t held in an escape room or on a hiking trail, but in one of the places where solidarity comes to life every day: the Madrid Food Bank.
On 2 and 18 June, the SLEEP’N team volunteered at one of the Madrid Food Bank’s branches. Throughout the day, we carried out essential tasks: sorting, handling and preparing food for distribution to charitable organisations. Beyond the physical work, it was a day to connect – not only with one another, but with a reality that we often forget.
The Madrid Food Bank is a not-for-profit organisation that has been operating for over 30 years. Its mission is clear: to combat food waste, distribute food free of charge to charitable organisations, and raise awareness of social vulnerability, food waste and food insecurity.
In 2024, the Madrid Food Bank supported an average of 121,649 people a year, thanks to the collaboration of 533 charitable organisations. To this end, it distributed more than 16.9 million kilos of food — 63.3 per cent of which came from food recovery — reaffirming its commitment to environmental and social sustainability.
Over the past year, the Food Bank had more than 8,200 occasional volunteers. Volunteering is a key component of major campaigns such as the Gran Recogida or Operaciones Kilo, but also in the day-to-day running of its warehouses.
Our team experienced first-hand the energy and commitment of these people. The fact is that the organisation runs not only on logistics, but also on heart: 92.5 per cent of the people working at the foundation do so on a voluntary basis, and no member of the management team is paid for their work.
Beyond what we learnt about logistics, what we took away was a greater awareness of our surroundings and the certainty that small actions can make a big difference. Taking part in an organisation like this made us reflect on the impact each of us can have — as individuals and as a company.
Here at SLEEP’N, we encourage other companies, organisations and individuals to support this initiative. There are many ways to contribute: volunteering, making donations, and taking part in their projects. We’re proud to have done our bit, and we’ll certainly be back.
