On 10 and 11 June, Madrid takes on a more hipster and crafty vibe at the Mercado de Motores.
I’m sure you’ve already visited some of the most urban markets in London, Berlin or New York, and you’re missing out on Madrid even though it’s right on your doorstep. If you haven’t been, you should make a note to go. It’s almost become a ritual for Madrileños to go along, not just for the brilliant atmosphere but also for the stalls on offer: vintage fashion, craftspeople of all kinds and delicious food.
Over 200 small-scale craftspeople, designers, chefs and creators of all kinds are waiting to welcome more than 30,000 people who, like you, visit this market at every event.
At this year’s event, if you like singing, the market has organised‘Kararocker’, a karaoke session with live music. You can choose one of the 50 songs on offer, accompanied by professional musicians, and take to the stage. But there’ll be activities to suit all tastes and ages, including for children.
Another activity you’ll find is “Express Beauty” with the Treatwell van. In the beauty van, make-up and hairdressing services are guaranteed.
Oh! And if you’ve got a dog, don’t worry – there are dog sitters on hand. You don’t have to choose between taking your pet for a walk or going to the market; you can do both.
By the way, do you know how it all began? Back in 2012, Teresa Castanedo and Juan Fraile started organising this market on a site owned by Metro de Madrid called Nave de Motores (which is where the name comes from). Faced with huge crowds, they had to take the plunge and move it to the Railway Museum.
So now you know – you’ve got something to do this weekend.
