At SLEEP’N, we believe in a better world for everyone, and we know that to achieve this we must start with ourselves. That is why we are deeply committed to society, our staff and the environment. Our commitment takes the form of a number of initiatives that we are constantly developing, which you can find out more about in the GREEN’N section of our website.
We are actively engaged in ongoing environmental improvement initiatives, achieving results such as the following:
Efficient energy management:
- The energy we use is 100% renewable.
- We encourage the use of natural ventilation rather than air conditioning when it is not too hot, and we remind customers of the importance of keeping windows closed when using air conditioning.
- Meter readings are taken monthly to monitor consumption (water, electricity and gas).
- Our consumption of water, gas and electricity is below the European average, in line with the levels proposed by Travelife.
- The meter readings will be analysed, once 12 months’ data have been recorded, in order to plan a more precise consumption strategy and identify opportunities that will enable us to continue reducing our environmental impact.
- Staff, both hotel employees and contractors, have received training on the importance of energy saving and how to manage it efficiently.
- When replacing or purchasing electrical equipment, priority will be given to items featuring energy-efficient technology.
- Energy-saving systems are in place throughout the hotel:
- Use of LEDs in corridors, guest rooms and communal areas. Lights controlled by motion sensors in corridors.
- Air conditioning is normally controlled from the guest room, but we monitor the use of the units from reception to ensure responsible use within the framework of sustainability.
- The lights on the ground floor are automated to make the most of natural light and save energy.
- The lights in the rooms are switched on by inserting the key into the socket and switch off automatically when the key is removed.
- Upon check-in, guests are given a single key to avoid electricity costs when the room is unoccupied.
- Electronic equipment that is not in use at night is switched off, as are the lights in communal areas (with the exception of reception).
Staff are reminded of these measures each morning during the daily briefing. They are familiar with the energy-saving measures and
Guests can find information on the hotel’s energy-saving measures on the website.
Water saving:
- Towels are changed every 3 days and bed linen every 5 days; guests are made aware of this through an additional charge of €5 if they wish to have them washed before this period.
- Water consumption is monitored monthly.
- Any water leaks, drips or seepage are dealt with immediately.
- Toilets are fitted with two buttons to control the flush and the refill.
- The flow rates of showers and toilets are regulated to reduce water consumption per minute without compromising water pressure.
- The use of chemicals in the cleaning process has been reduced, thereby preventing water pollution.
- The guest facilities are fitted with hand-sensor taps to save water.
- The washing machine and dishwasher are run as full as possible to avoid wasting water.
Waste management:
- We prioritise products made from recyclable or low-impact materials: breakfast boxes are made from biodegradable material, and napkins are 100% recycled.
- Plastic has been eliminated from most of the products sold or used on the premises.
- Three-compartment recycling bins (cardboard/paper, plastic and glass) are available on all floors for use by customers and staff, as well as a shared biodegradable bin.
- Strict controls are in place for toxic products such as batteries (the weight of used batteries is recorded monthly and they are taken to a collection point), printer toner cartridges and light bulbs.
- Breakfast portions are calculated the night before to avoid food wastage.
- Food inflows and outflows are managed efficiently using the FIFO method.
- Products are purchased in bulk to avoid excessive packaging.
- Electronic communication is preferred over paper printouts.
- The paper used is always 100% recycled.
- We print on both sides wherever possible.
- Paper that has already been written on is reused for daily reports and internal memos.
Management of hazardous substances:
- The premises contain very few hazardous substances.
- These substances are mainly found in cleaning products used sporadically and in a regulated manner, and in some maintenance products.
- These products are stored safely, away from other incompatible products, always below eye level, away from sunlight and under lock and key.
- Gloves are available to staff for use with these substances.
- The staff responsible for using these products are fully familiar with the instructions for use.
- Employees have direct access to the safety data sheets for all the products they handle.
- The use of these substances is recorded along with the details of the employee using them.
Animals:
- The accommodation does not house any animals.
- This establishment does not sell tickets for, nor does it provide information on, shows in which animals are injured, killed or forced to behave in ways contrary to their nature. This includes zoos, aquariums, bullfights and similar events.
- The accommodation also suggests alternative options when a guest specifically enquires about such events.
