Madrid Río is a vast leisure and cultural hub, not only because of the historic monuments and leisure and cultural facilities it houses, but also because it serves as a vantage point from which to admire and experience Madrid’s historic sights.
This park, situated between the two banks of the River Manzanares – hence its name – has been in existence for a relatively short time. Madrid Río is a vast recreational and cultural hub, both for the historic monuments and leisure and cultural facilities it houses, and as a vantage point from which to admire and experience Madrid’s historic landmarks.
The park is ideal for walking, cycling or having a picnic… What’s more, there are 17 children’s play areas along the Salón de Pinos, all featuring swings made from sustainable and natural materials such as wood and hemp rope, which form spider’s webs, hammocks, suspension bridges and climbing vines. Each area has different features tailored to specific age groups; consequently, there are areas designed for younger children and others for older children, which focus on skill, balance and strength.
Madrid Río is also a space where adults can enjoy a wide range of cultural activities, including fitness trails, pétanque courts, games tables and the Manzanares River Interpretation Centre. From all the cultural activities (exhibitions, music festivals, theatre productions…) held at Matadero Madrid, right through to the newly built bridges.
Madrid Río was built between 2006 and 2011. Last year, the project won the Verónica Rudge Green Award from Harvard University for its design and its social and cultural impact on the river’s transformation.
If you’re in Madrid and want to see the colours of autumn, you simply must visit Madrid Río and discover its cultural and architectural attractions. If you haven’t been to this area before, or if you were here before 2006, the transformation will surprise you – we can assure you of that.
